San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus Announces Guest Artistic Director for Remainder of 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Acclaimed conductor and composer Steve Milloy will lead SDGMC’s summer and holiday concerts

SAN DIEGO, Calif., March 7, 2025 — The San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus (SDGMC) announced today that Steve Milloy has officially signed on as Guest Artistic Director for the remainder of 2025. Milloy brings decades of experience in choral directing, arranging, composition, and music education, and he will conduct the Chorus’s summer production, Abracadabra!, and return to lead the holiday concert, Jingle, in December.

“Steve’s artistry, leadership, and deep commitment to community align beautifully with our mission,” said Sarah Thompson, Interim Executive Director of SDGMC. “Our singers are energized, our audiences are ecstatic, and we are thrilled to have him guide the rest of our 2025 season.”

Milloy has a rich history in the LGBTQ+ choral movement. He served as Artistic Director of the Cincinnati Men’s Chorus for five years and most recently led MenAlive – Orange County’s Gay Men’s Chorus. His work spans musical theatre, choral arranging, and composition, with extensive roles as music director, arranger, and accompanist for ensembles including the DiverseCity Youth Chorus and the Martin Luther King Coalition Chorale. He has coached and directed singers in schools, churches, theaters, and on concert stages across the Midwest, and he has performed in theme parks, for troops overseas, on TV and radio, and with the a cappella octet Pieces of 8.

As a composer and arranger, Milloy has been commissioned by hundreds of church and community choruses in the United States and the United Kingdom. His celebrated work Bayard Rustin: The Man Behind the Dream, commissioned by One Voice Mixed Chorus (St. Paul), has been performed nationwide. His newest work, Sincerely Yours, Pauli Murray, premiered in March and is being programmed across the country through 2026. He coauthored Popular Voiceworks 1 and Popular Voiceworks 2 for Oxford University Press with Dr. Charles Beale.

“I am honored to serve SDGMC and to make music with this passionate, talented community,” said Steve Milloy. “Together we will deliver performances that celebrate resilience, joy, and the power of choral storytelling for audiences across San Diego.”

Milloy holds a BA in Music from Miami University and an MM in Conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers and serves on the board of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses.
